Cover stories from his time in Russia, such as “The Mafia”, “Red Army, “Stalin’s long shadows” “In Siberia”, “Moloch Moscow”, “Trendy Moscow”, “Religion in Russia,” and many more, allowing profound insights into the secret areas of this country. These cover stories were published in all important magazines worldwide. According to Cornell Capa, the founder of the International Center of Photography in New York Burkhard’s works are, “outstanding examples of classical photojournalism.” By now, they are also a unique photographic testimony of the historical upheaval in Russia. In 1997, he was awarded the INFINITY Award for photojournalism as the first German photographer.
Burkard taught introductory seminars about photojournalism at the school of journalism (Henri-Nannen-Schule) in Hamburg for several years. He taught Master Classes for aspiring photographers for the World Press Photo Organization and held lectures as a guest lecturer at several universities at home and abroad. The German Society for Photography honored him with the Dr-Erich-Salomon-Award for exemplary use of photography in journalism.
